TACOMAN HAS OLD DOCUMENT
An original document signed by President Abraham Lincoln
is among the possessions of Olin F. Pierce, Tacoma.
Pierce's great uncle, Theodore H. Dodd, was appointed
as Indian agent for the territory of New Mexico by Lincoln
and his appointment was countersigned by John P. Usher,
Lincoln's secretary of the Department of the Interior.
The appointment was dated March, 21, 1865, less than a month
before Lincoln was shot. Pierce is an employee
of the Monarch Door company.
TWO NORTHWEST NIECES HEIRS TO HUGE FORTUNE

Mrs. Cora Nidever, 85, of Fresno, CA, who made an oil
fortune on 80 acres of barren land she inherited near Coalinga,
CA, left an estate in excess of two million dollars, including
$1,837,350 in cash.
She died following a long illness. A childless widow, she left
no will. A petition for letters of administration listed seven
nieces and nephews as legal heirs. They include Dorothy Robinson
of Seattle and Ruby Palmer of Bremerton, WA.
Mrs. Nidever inherited the property from her mother,
Mrs. Hester Binkley, who had homesteaded it at the turn
of the century. Oil was discovered in 1939.

Charles N. Hess, formerly an inmate of the Oregon insane
asylum, having been sent from Astoria, was found today in the
outskirts of Goldendale raving mad. It required six men to bring
him to town. Hess's hobby is populistic financial ideas.

Accidental in Part Only
Judge Chris Kalahan of Kalama was in the city on business
Thursday telling this story; Judge Kalahan knew his brother,
John Kalahan, mayor of Algonquin, Illinois, was coming
to see him but didn't know when. The mayor knew his brother,
the Judge, lived in Kalama but didn't know where. The two met
on a train by accident. They hadn't seen each other in 46 years.

worked very hard and towed the Burcham dredge up the slough
through the Bush and Kletsch
places to start digging at the corner of the Gray-Gross-Taylor
dike.
Mrs. F. L. Fraser hosted the Woman's Missionary
Society of the Presbyterian Church. The subject of the study
hour was Syria and uplifting the women of that land. Afterwards
Miss Mary Harris and Miss Jessie Snyder
performed a number of musical selections. Refreshments were
served.
